Hi, How do I pronounce the names of the following Russian cities? Rzhev, Khaborovsk, and is there somewhere where the correct stress is on place names? Thanks

Hi dsimiller,

Rzhev is pronounced [Rjief] and it's written in Russian Ржев. To be able to pronounce the sound ж you can check the alphabet section on Masterrussian:

http://masterrussian.com/russian_alphabet.shtml

Khabarovsk is pronounced [Khabárafsk] and it's written in Russian Хабаровск. To be able to pronounce the sound х, you can also check the same section.

There's no correct stress on place names, their pronounciation has to be learned to heart.

Ok,thanks for that guys, its just that recently I've heard for instance Khabarovsk, pronounced KharBARovsk,KHARbarovsk and even khabaROVSK and Rzhev both Rzhev and RzhOV.Although I have a very basic knowledge of Russian there has always so it seems to me to be confusion re stress on place names.Orel is another oity I've heard pronounced Orel and ORYOL,even on Russia Today. Thanks for your answers, looks a great site you have here Regards
