Literal translation

If a word is composed of,say, a preposition and noun together is there any way to get a literal translation of the word?

I think he means that самовар literally means "it boils itself"

Are you about the worlds like "вдруг" or "наконец"? I don't know all the cases, but generally they have a completely different meaning from the one for their being apart :). So treat them like new words, with no connection to the words they seem to be compound of ;)
